RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT: Muy Bueno- Cape Girardeau, MO

Muy Bueno is a family-run Mexican restaurant nestled in downtown Cape Girardeau, MO. Offering a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, Muy Bueno has an expansive menu, including nachos, burritos, soups, and more. They also offer a breakfast menu and are available for online ordering and catering.

For our first stop on Restaurant Spotlight, we traveled to the historic city of Cape Girardeau, MO. Set on the Mississippi River and home to the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge, Cape Girardeau offers many types of food including Cajun, Irish, and Mexican cuisines.

Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge Arriving on a warm summer day at Muy Bueno, my guest and I were immediately impressed by the option of patio seating. The weather was beautiful and inviting for an outdoor dining experience. Choosing to dine inside, we stepped in and the smell of delicious food filled the air. Happy diners were talking amongst themselves and enjoying delicious-looking food. Thrilled by the atmosphere and very hungry, we couldn't wait to be part of the experience. We were seated almost immediately by a friendly hostess and served chips and salsa. The chips had a homemade, crispy texture and were salted to our liking, accompanied by a mild and well-blended salsa. We almost got full before our entree's arrived, that's how delicious the pairing was.

Caleb, our server, came right over to us and asked what we would like to drink and if we were ready to order. He was very attentive, knowledgeable, and courteous. I went with a Coke while my guest went with water. As my guest and I scanned over our menus, I was impressed by the variety of the menu. They also feature "Missouri Favorites", which include Carne Asada Fries (Layers of fries topped with marinated steak and drenched in queso, with fresh pico de gallo and sour cream,) and the Muy Bueno Plate (Grilled chicken on a bed of rice and drenched in queso.)

I decided on the tasty-sounding Pico de Gallo Quesadilla, a freshly chopped mix of jalapeño, tomato, onion, and cilantro in melted cheese between a folded flour tortilla. My guest chose Carnitas, which are chunks of seasoned braised pork served with a side of pico de gallo, guacamole, and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. We waited approximately 20 minutes for our food, which we felt was an acceptable time. When our food arrived, we were both very impressed. My quesadilla looked amazing, the pico de gallo looked perfectly blended in with the melty cheese, while my guest seemed impressed with their carnitas. My quesadilla was one of the best I have ever eaten. The freshly chopped pico de gallo made this dish. It was the first quesadilla I've eaten where the pico de gallo was inside of the quesadilla as opposed to the top. It was served warm with a side of freshly shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

My guest's carnitas came served with beans and cheese, rice, flour tortillas, fresh pico de gallo with lime, and sour cream. They enjoyed their carnitas, commenting that "It's so good" and that the only thing they would have preferred differently was onions with their carnitas.

By the end of our meal, my guest and I had to get several to-go boxes as this was a feast of a meal. Caleb brought us the bill, and we both paid about $13 (plus a tip, Caleb was amazing) per meal, which we felt was a great price. We even got free chips and salsa to go! We were very impressed by Muy Bueno, from how fast we were seated, to our server Caleb, to the food. It is no wonder why they have a 4.5 out of 5 on Yelp. Reflecting on our wonderful experience, my guest and I will definitely be returning to Muy Bueno and the historic city of Cape Girardeau. Muy Bueno is an excellent restaurant with fast and friendly service, and it will hit the spot for authentic Mexican cuisine.
