It has been an exciting summer for MESZ and competitive eating. MESZ has consistently hosted eating contest qualifiers and consolation rounds, paving the way for the championship on August 25th.
In May, we wrote about the organization, detailing their journey to put competitive eating on the map in Hungary and beyond. (You can read the article here.)
It all comes down to the much-anticipated championship, where seven qualifying champions will go head-to-head to see who will become the victor. MESZ has released most of the details on its website and social media, but they have kept some things secret, which spectators and even the eaters won't know until championship day.
FINAL CONSOLATION ROUND
The final consolation round was held on Saturday, August 10th, in Cegléd, Hungary, as part of a street food festival. Contestants had one last chance to qualify for the championship, including those who had not won any previous qualifying rounds.
Contestants had to speed-eat two hamburgers as quickly as possible. After racing against the clock, Károly Kardos emerged victorious, securing his spot in the championship. Ádám Csillag and Gábor Veres took second and third place, respectively.
SPECIAL GUEST: JWEBBY CAN EAT
A few months ago, MESZ teased that a well-known competitive eater would attend the event, challenging followers to guess who it could be.
They later announced that it was Australia's number one competitive eater, James Webb, AKA JWebby Can Eat. James hails from Sydney and is ranked fourth in the world by Major League Eating. He holds many world records, including but not limited to consuming 350 donut holes in 8 minutes, 338 pistachios in 8 minutes, and 13.5 lbs of chocolate fudge in 8 minutes.
SPECIAL GUEST: Dániel Abebe
MESZ recently announced another special guest, vocalist Dániel Abebe. He is an accomplished singer from Szentes, Hungary, and has had an extensive music career, including multiple album releases during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
The Burger II Blues II BeerFest will run from August 23rd to the 25th at Bikás Park in Budapest, Hungary. The festival will feature food, drinks, an amusement park, live music, and more. The championship final hosted by MESZ will be part of the festival on Sunday, August 25th, the last day of the festivities. The event will be free to attend.
The seven qualifying champions will face off with a multi-course menu featuring pirog (a baked case of dough with sweet or savory filling), two different types of hamburgers, one fish gyro, and one waffle filled with ice cream. A secret surprise addition to the menu will be revealed on Sunday, adding more excitement and unpredictability to the competition.
Speed is the key for the championship round, and the contestant who consumes their food the fastest will be crowned the ultimate eating champion of Hungary by MESZ, receiving bragging rights, rewards, and an exclusive champion t-shirt.
MESZ plans to send its champion to multiple countries, including the United States, where the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is held annually in New York City.
It will be an epic conclusion to a summer of competitive eating and entertainment hosted by MESZ. They have come a long way in their first year as an eating organization. We look forward to more eating contests from them and wish all competitors the best of luck!
